Door Instructions - For 2000 through 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee. Take note how the wires and arms go through the door plastic and remove the plastic that insulates the door. Remove the inner. wee not working. I checked the boot in
between the driver door and the cab and
found a 10g black ground wire in half. It
was being held on by the outer insulated
layer. I cut about 1 inch back on both
ends, added a small (about 3 inches long)
extra 10g ground wire to both ends.
Twisted the ends together and capped
them. Electrical taped the caps to the
wires so it doesn't cause anymore issues.
Disconnected the battery for 20 minutes.
Reconnected the battery and everything
worked perfectly again. I also checked the
passenger door for any wire issues just to
be safe. Lord only knows I couldn't deal
with no AC or power windows in the hot
weather again.
Had that problem on a 2004 Jeep Grand Cheroke. Also the inside light wouldn't go out and killed the battery. It was the broken wire in the boot between the drivers door and the body. It is a comon problem with Jeeps. I heard one dealer wanted $1000 to fix the problem. It is that wire you mentioned.
Yeah the black wire was completely torn in half. I just added a small section and capped it off. At first it didn't fix the problem then I disconnected the battery for 20 min. Then everything worked perfectly again.
how do you get the boot off
I just had the same problem with the windows/side view mirrors not working and the inside dome lights staying on. I went to my mechanic and he was able to turn off the dome lights however he said he would have to keep my Jeep for at least a day to figure it out and he said it may cost more than $1,000.00 to fix it. I just fixed the issue thanks to you for under $5.00!!! There was a slice in the boot on the door so I could access the wires and just put a Butt Splice Electrical Wire Connector on it..didn't even need any extra wire. I put some auto electrical tape on it to make sure it doesn't move..and so far so good!! Thank you so much for the help!!!
2003 Jeep Grand Cherokee same problems not working and the exact same issue broken black wire in the boot between door and body. Soldered the wires back together and now waiting to re connect battery. Thank you very much Jonathan!
Have a 2008 grand Cherokee the front windows and door locks stop working the tailgate won’t open and my gauges on the dash stop working. But my back windows work fine the truck runs fine what could be the problem ?
I had same problem on 2004 WG grand Cherokee CRD. Snapped on front passenger side, again under plastic boot. Bit fiddly but able to slide the boot back and use wire connector with screws as a quick fix in tight spot. Didn't need to splice in new wire section to join. Hope this also helps others. What a nightmare without these answers

I'm having the same problem. I pushed the black boot between the door jam back and found the power wire broke (orange w/black tracer)fixed it but it st up lol is not working. I did the battery thing for 30 min also. Still nothing. I'm losing my mind here.
My 2004Jeep Grand Cherokee driver door locks and all windows stopped working. I found the black 10/12 gage wire and a yellow 18 gage wire broken in two within the driver side black boot covering the harness into the car body. I stripped and butt spliced both wires. Locks and all windows now work again. 5-10 minute job. Thanks for the heads up. I just used a pair of needle nose plyers and a flat head screwdriver to pull the black boot off the door frame to expose the wiring harness.
Do I need to disconnect the battery to do this? My lights were on inside but they went out as I was coming home from work tonight. I was planning on working on it tomorrow, do I need to disconnect the battery?

Correct fix, but it's not 10 gauge wire. 8 or 6.
95 Grand Cherokee Laredo 5.2 had no windows working, looked at drivers door and spliced split black wire together and the 2 drivers windows work! The passengers will not move from either control? Check all fuses. Do you think it’s the switches on just the right side? Or maybe a fuse in the engine box?
the same thing just happened to my jeep. did you bring this to a mechanic? i dont know if i trust myself to do this myself but am not looking to invest much more into my 2004.. any quick fixes or 'bandaids'
prayed back rubber boot from door side, and clear as day black 10g wire was broken. Spliced it and repaired and had total job completed in 20 minutes. Thank you to all for your help. Was not happy thinking that I could have an electrical issue. Love working on cars till it comes to wiring. Again Thank You.
i am not gonna lie, when i read about this black wire broken in half-i was so skeptical i really didn't believe it until i went check it out and damm! there it was.i peeled each end back a 1/4 inch and used a barrel crimp and problem solved. my windows.locks and my red light alarm all works now. no more problem . thanks everyone!
Found the notorious broken wire in the driver door boot in my 2004 grand Cherokee. Stripped end that goes back into the cab and spliced in another 10g wire about 8” long that’s a little more flexible, pulled it though the boot, and soldered the other end to the wire on the door end. Been dealing with this for a couple of years and never knew what it was, because the windows and A/C worked okay-ish when the door was closed. This morning after work everything quit, and I found this thread. 10 mins worth of work and it’s just like the day I bought it almost 8 years ago.

GuruHMCNV,Black wire needs to be there. Should see broken piece on harness going into door. Take trim piece off where hood release is, should be able to find other end of black wire from there with the rest of the wire harness that goes to driver door.
2004 Jeep GC Limited- Same problems, Dome lights stay on, no FOB operation, no windows other than Driver's side, only Driver's electric lock works. Found driver's side Black wire broken, blue broken, orange broken, yellow broken and one more- spliced all, tried leaving battery disconnected a couple of times for about 30 min, still no change after repairs. I have yet to check the passenger door under the boot, but getting discouraged.
Okay to add to my previous comments, After repairing wiring to Driver's door harness, there was no change and the FOB's still did not work. From another site comments, I did open the wiring harness to the Passenger Front Door, and there I also found the BLACK wire was broken. I'd already repaired 5 wires on the Driver's Door, but only 1 wire broken on Passenger Front door- and YES, I repaired the BLACK wire there ALSO, and BINGO- Everything started working again- I put in a Loop of Flexible wire so hopefully it prevents the severe bending these wires get and I can go another 170K miles without issues.
